Flood Damage Recovery Process
Last modified 7 October 2009
The February, March and now May 2009 floods have resulted in an estimated $17 million damages bill to public infrastructure.
The three floods were declared as "Natural Disasters" by the NSW State Government which allows Council access to financial assistance through NSW Treasury. The provision of funding is not however automatic nor does it apply to all types of damage. Council has to firstly, identify the damage, estimate a repair cost to the pre-existing standard, and then submit this schedule to the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) (road and bridge damage) for assessment. Each item is assessed for eligibility and costing after which the RTA will issue a schedule of approval works.
Council staff have been assessing the damage continuously for the last 6 months, such is the extent of damage. In fact, these three floods will result in the highest flood restoration costs in recent history for this area. The repair works, once approved, are likely to take 2 to 3 years to fully complete.
Progressive approval is being received and repair works promptly commenced.
