Sophie Smith is the Founder of the Running for Premature Babies Foundation, and author of the memoir ‘Sophie’s Boys’.
After losing all three of their triplet sons, Henry, Jasper & Evan, to complications relating to their premature birth, Sophie and her late husband Ash were determined to turn their own tragedy into a force for good. What began as an idea to run a half marathon and raise $20,000 for one lifesaving humidicrib for the hospital that cared for their babies, grew into what is now a registered charitable foundation providing lifesaving neonatal equipment and research to give premature babies a better chance of survival. The cause has so far inspired over 5000 people to run, and raised over $4 million, directly benefitting over 6000 premature babies and their families so far.
Sophie and Ash went on to have two more sons, Owen and Harvey, but tragically Ash passed away from brain cancer in 2016. Sophie continues to work to grow the Foundation they started together, to raise the profile of prematurity and to give premature babies the best possible chance of survival.
