Nine conferees became Australian citizens on Wednesday 20 May at a heart-warming ceremony in the Nambucca Valley Council Chambers.
Nambucca Valley Mayor Gary Lee said this week was the second citizenship ceremony he had officiated this year, the first being held on 25 January as part of the Nambucca Valley Community Awards event.
“This week’s citizenship ceremony was a very proud and sincere day for me,” he said.
“Being a part of these days is one of my favourite tasks as Mayor, as it reminds me and everybody else who participates, just how lucky we are to be Australians.
“I thank all of our new citizens and all of their family and friends for coming on Wednesday 20 May – the gallery in Council Chambers was absolutely packed and this support from loved ones made the day extra special for everyone there.”
Australia is a diverse society and it celebrates the richness of its community. Citizenship is a way of uniting and gathering the people of Australia as one. It is about people sharing in the common goal of making Australia an even better place, building on their diverse heritages.
Council officiates citizenship ceremonies at the request of the Australian Department of Home Affairs. Usually, Council hosts up to four ceremonies during each year, in particular on days of significance. The next citizenship ceremony is expected to occur on Australian Citizenship Day on 17 September 2026.
