Boundary Street in Macksville has a new section of footpath and kerb and Mann Street in Nambucca Heads a new refuge island after sunny weather this week helped local contractors finish construction work.

Nambucca Valley Acting General Manager David Moloney said improving footpaths delivers on Council’s core commitment to maintain the Nambucca Valley’s infrastructure.

“Every year out of Council’s capital works budget, Council allocates funding to maintain and improve our valley’s infrastructure,” he said.

“Keeping footpaths functional is particularly important as it improves accessibility and connectivity for pedestrians and people using mobility scooters, wheel-chairs, and prams.

“It’s great we’ve had this window of fine weather this week to get onto these projects for Macksville, plus a new refuge island on Mann Street in Nambucca Heads, and I thank the community for their patience while contractors have carried out the works.”

Eungai-based Apex Concreting Solutions Director, Jackson Adams, said an excavator tore up the old Boundary Street footpath and kerb on Monday and on Tuesday this week and concrete was poured on Thursday and Friday, 4-5 June for the new footpath section.

“This has been a great local job for Apex, on what is a very busy street during school drop-off and pick-up times,” he said.

“I expect high school students and community members will be walking on the new footpath from Tuesday 9 June, if the weather stays fine like it is forecasted to.”

Replacement of the retaining wall alongside the Macksville wharf or old Government wharf as it is sometimes called, will start next week on Tuesday 9 June, weather depending.

This major replacement of up to 80 metres of deteriorated retaining wall adjacent to the footpath will cause changed traffic conditions in River Street for a period of approximately two weeks, until about 23 June, weather depending.

For the River Street, Macksville, project community members should expect:

  • Traffic detours: vehicles travelling south-bound on Giinagay Way into Macksville will not be able to turn left into River Street at the intersection just south of the old Macksville bridge, during construction hours 7am to 4pm weekdays from 9-23 June.

A detour will be in place for vehicles wishing to access businesses located 13-18 River Street, or Gumma. Detour is via Partridge Street, Macksville, and then onto this section of River Street or through to Gumma using other local roads.

  • Vehicle parking interruptions: parking along River Street (directly across from the Star Hotel) will not be available during business hours and drivers are encouraged to park elsewhere.
  • Changed pedestrian access: there will be no pedestrian access along this section of footpath adjacent to the Nambucca River. The pedestrian underpass located beneath the old Macksville bridge will also be closed for the period of 9-23 June. Pedestrians are encouraged to cross Cooper Street at the Wallace Street traffic signals and then walk to River Street via other footpaths.
