Collaborative regional approach to addressing modern slavery

Nambucca Valley Councillors last night unanimously resolved to advocate for and promote improved regional coordination between Councils, government agencies, enforcement bodies, and other stakeholders to better address modern slavery on the Mid North Coast.

This discussion by Councillors and the subsequent resolution followed a visit to the Nambucca Valley, Bellingen and Coffs Coast region by the NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner earlier this month.  

Council resolved to write to the NSW Premier, Local Government NSW and all Mid North Coast Mayors, seeking support to:

  1. Strengthen the powers and capacity of the NSW Anti-Slavery Commissioner to receive, assess, coordinate and act upon intelligence
  2. Examine legislation and regulatory changes that would allow relevant information lawfully obtained during council activities to be appropriately shared
  3. Examine a clear referral pathway between councils, the NSW Anti-Slavery Commissioner, NSW Police and relevant Commonwealth agencies
  4. Develop training for Council employees so they can recognise potential indicators of modern slavery
  5. Provide Councils with appropriate legal protections and guidance
  6. Provide funding and resources so Councils are not expected to carry the financial burden of detecting and reporting matters
  7. Develop an intelligence-sharing framework for local Councils to the relevant agencies
  8. Create a coordinated local, state and federal government agency response.
