Bridge build gains momentum with deck placed

Work on six new, more resilient bridges across the Nambucca Valley is gaining momentum, with Council’s contractor successfully placing the first concrete bridge deck this week.
Nambucca Valley Council Acting General Manager David Moloney said council’s current bridge lifting and capital works program are substantial and good progress is being made.
“Council has several grant-funded infrastructure projects underway, as well as our own capital works, so our engineering and infrastructure teams have hit the ground running in 2026-27,” he said.
“A big program we are currently delivering is the $9.98 million bridge betterment program, funded by the Regional Roads and Transport Recovery Package (RRTRP) through the jointly funded Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.”
The RRTRP aims to ‘build back better’ by ensuring infrastructure damaged by the extreme weather events of February and March 2022 are not just reinstated, but rebuilt stronger, better and more able to withstand the challenges posed by future natural disasters.
“At Way Way Bridge recently, two concrete planks were placed onto abutments over Way Way Creek by a 140 tonne crane. This follows eight weeks of construction work, demolishing the old timber bridge, preparing the site and then drilling down and installing bridge piles,” Mr Mitchell said.
“Council’s contractors there yesterday, Pynx Cranes and Coastal Transport Services, did an amazing job – even delivering the heavy plant and the 20-metre-long trucks down the two-kilometre single-lane dirt road to the bridge site was a feat.
“I thank our community for their patience and understanding while we carry out these important works, along with our broader capital works program. Temporary traffic detours can be inconvenient, but they are necessary to allow us to deliver stronger, more resilient infrastructure for our community and across the region.”
Brief update on construction of the other bridges:
- Roberts Bridge, Taylors Arm: piles are placed and head stocks were poured on Tuesday 2 September. Girders are scheduled to be placed on Monday 7 September.
- Sullivans Bridge, Valla: piling is underway and girders are on site ready to be placed once the head stocks are poured.
- Browns Crossing No 1. Bridge, Warrell Creek: piling is underway and it is expected to continue for the next 2-3 weeks, depending on the hardness of the underground rock.
- Cassidys Bridge, Newee Creek: the old bride has been demolished and road works have started on Wirrimbi Road to build it up higher. Next, piling will start.
To deliver these new bridges, as well as a major culvert replacement starting on 14 September at Boat Harbour Road, Utungun, several roads have had temporary closures, at the bridge or work site.
Traffic detours are in place and residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the Live Traffic website or use maps apps on smart phones when planning their journeys, as these platforms will have the latest information on traffic detours.
