Council’s structures team are today starting replacement of the retaining wall adjacent to Macksville Wharf or old Government wharf.

Nambucca Valley Acting General Manager David Moloney said the retaining wall had deteriorated and it needed complete replacement.

“Our Structures team are replacing up to 80 metres of retaining wall adjacent to the footpath skirting along the Nambucca River in Macksville, located opposite the Star Hotel, from approximately 9 June to 23 June,” he said.

“Enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, this popular riverwalk will become an even better community, tourist, and fishing spot once re-construction of its adjacent retaining wall is completed.”

Traffic and pedestrian detours will be in place during construction hours of 7am to 4pm weekdays from 9-23 June, weather depending, including:

  • Traffic detours: vehicles travelling south-bound on Giinagay Way into Macksville will not be able to turn left into River Street at the intersection just south of the old Macksville bridge, during construction hours 7am to 4pm weekdays from 9-23 June.

A detour will be in place for vehicles wishing to access businesses located 13-18 River Street, or Gumma. Detour is via Partridge Street, Macksville, and then onto this section of River Street or through to Gumma using other local roads.

  • Vehicle parking interruptions: parking along River Street (directly across from the Star Hotel) will not be available during business hours and drivers are encouraged to park elsewhere.

  • Changed pedestrian access: there will be no pedestrian access along this section of footpath adjacent to the Nambucca River. The pedestrian underpass located beneath the old Macksville bridge will also be closed for the period of 9-23 June, weather depending. Pedestrians are encouraged to cross Cooper Street at the Wallace Street traffic signals and then walk to River Street via other footpaths.

Council thanks the community for its patience while the retaining wall is replaced. If you have any questions or comments, please email council@nambucca.nsw.gov.au or phone (02) 6568 2555.
