Thank you our important volunteers this National Volunteer Week

It’s National Volunteer Week and we wish to say a big thank you to the thousands of volunteers who support our public facilities, services and charitable organisations in our community.
Nambucca Valley Mayor Gary Lee said volunteers play an integral part in virtually every facet of Nambucca Valley life and this week was the perfect time for everyone to consider whether they have a few hours to spare to support a volunteer organisation.
“I would like to thank the thousands of volunteers in our valley who help to run charities, sports fields and teams, and those generous people who give their time to be a part of a Section 355 Committee for Council,” he said.
“There are about 250 volunteers who help to administer our public facilities and support services by being involved in a Section 355 committee, the volunteer committees that operate under Section 355 of the Local Government Act 1993.
“All of our volunteers are caring, community-minded people and we thank you for your contribution.”
Coronation Park Section 355 Committee volunteer, Peter Lewis, said he enjoys volunteering to support the running of Coronation Park because it helps him to connect with his community.
“I volunteer because I like to meet people,” Mr Lewis said.
“Being a volunteer on a sports field gives me the opportunity to meet people, away from pubs and clubs and the Main Street, a place where you can casually bump into someone and you get to have conversations.
“It’s a privilege to be able to do something in the community, even though the recognition is not there all the time, it’s good for me, it’s healthy for me.”
The theme of National Volunteer Week this week is ‘Your Year to Volunteer’, and it runs from today, Monday 18 May to Sunday 24 May 2026.
Nambucca Valley Council has 11 halls, the Visitor Information Centre in Nambucca Heads, two museums, as well as seven playing fields and numerous reserves, all of which are cared for by volunteer committees.
The NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards are currently open to applications. There are seven award categories, including Young Volunteer of the Year and Senior Volunteer of the Year, among others. Eligibility criteria applies to applications – learn more here.
